My Way of Living + Time

No dogs please and for a good reason

It was a really hot day up at the strawberry

farm, the kind of day that calls for air conditioning just so you don’t melt. I was manning the retail area, directing the few brave U-Pickers that ventured out to the fields, when I ran into

Generation don’t tell me no, with their poor dog.

You know whom I mean, those customers who refuse to accept no I am sorry, but that’s not possible. For hygienic reasons there are clear signs posted on the road to the fields that say NO DOGS PLEASE! No one wants to pick berries that have been peed on, or worse, and dogs do not belong in areas where food is being grown. It is a farm rule, and it must be kept for everyone, no exceptions.

These Gen No’ers just wouldn’t take no for a answer, they wanted to tie up their dog in the shade next to the field and go and pick berries, this was during the hottest part of the day, when the poor animal should never have been in a vehicle anyways.

I offered them other options, such a purchasing pre picked berries, or taking the dog back home, and returning alone. Then they insisted on returning late that night after the fields were closed, or coming in hours before the retail opened to pick in the morning. This would mean someone had to be there during closing hours to supervise them. Everyone works hard at the farm, down time is short and sweet, that was not a option.

This is just my opinion, but “ the customer is always right” doesn’t mean that they have the right to bully people into giving in and accommodating demands that are not realistic. It seems that they put their desire for berries ahead of the comfort of a animal that should never have been driven around in a hot vehicle anyways.

But like I said, that’s just my opinion. What would you have done? Hot, and panting…
