My Way of Living + Time

The summer porch

The sun slowly falls into the mountains sifted through the fir trees dark silhouettes. The last of it’s golden rays warming the boards of the porch where our feet rest. We can feel the subtle change in temperature as it goes down, thankfully bringing some cooler air. This is our moment, our memory in our favourite place. Our cat Boo lays at our feet, stretched out on one of the steps so generously built to wrap around the porch. He is in a trance after a good brushing, fur floating on the air, birds chirping, this is perfect cat entertainment to him. His people sitting with him, the feel of the brush through his fur, and birds creating movement for his eyes to track.

I lean against my husband, heedless of the heat, our after dinner cups of green tea sitting on the floor, as we perch on the top step. Bare feet dusty from the garden, a errant mosquito buzzing. The water feature bubbling away, it’s a moment, a memory, and it’s our favourite place to be. I would never have thought when I first opened those double French doors onto the little backyard porch, that the then icy cold, snow dusted area would bring us so much pleasure in the summer heat.

This summer porch is where we sit and contemplate our life, entertain, and eat. We listen to the birds sing their last evening song, and we watch the sun rise over the mountains in the early morning east from this porch.

It’s the first door we open in the morning, and the last to be closed up in the evening. It’s the place where Boots favourite chair lets him survey the back yard, but still feel safe. It’s the landing zone after a good day of gardening.

Being open on two sides, built in under the roofline of the house it’s protected during raging summer storms. There we sit during thunderstorms and watch the rain pour off the roofline. It’s a front line seat to see lightning, along with eagles perched in the trees.

It’s the place to think, to read, to blog. Everyone should have a favourite place at their house, even if it’s seasonal. If I were to ask you where your favourite spot was, what would you tell me? Porch-ing……
