Coconut water, or how to rate small town living

A few years ago the news paper from the really big city [Vancouver] ran a series of articles rating small towns in BC.

Small town living at it’s best? They compared liveability, employment aspects, housing costs, and the availability of certain ethnic foods in local grocery stores. Simple basic Thai ingredients like cilantro, coconut milk, rice noodles. and fish sauce. I should have paid more attention to the food items. Vancouver is known for it’s ethnic diversity, and the reasoning might be that should you foolishly choose to venture past the utopia of the big city for small town life, you would have to learn to make your own Thai food at home.

It’s a good assumption, since we are yet to find any thing remotely tasting like take out Chinese up here. We are not even talking the dynamic nuances of Szechwan, just ordinary Chinese food. What I wouldn’t give for some sweet and sour not just mouth puckering red tinged corn starch and vinegar.

So it should come as no surprise that I can’t find Coconut water in my local small town rip off grocery store. They did manage to rustle up some cans in the back, languishing on a forgotten shelf because no one had ever dreamed of buying them.

If you have not tried Coconut water when you are feeling dry and parched from the heat, I highly recommend it. It has great rehydrating properties, and contains potassium, and minerals along with tasting great.

These are merely reflections on life and I am not complaining, after all if I could simply remember to pick up some Coconut water on the almost big city trips, I wouldn’t need to hassle the small town grocer into searching through their dusty shelves. Drooling and dreaming…
